President Donald Trump is facing a major legal and political crisis as the U.S. Supreme Court prepares to rule on the legality of his global tariff policy. Trump has warned that if the Court strikes down the tariffs, the United States could be “screwed” financially and politically, potentially forcing the government to refund hundreds of billions of dollars to importers.
At the center of the case is whether Trump exceeded his presidential authority by using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to impose broad tariffs—something multiple lower courts have already ruled was illegal. During Supreme Court arguments, justices expressed serious doubts about Trump’s legal justification.
At the same time, a previously sealed federal court ruling was unsealed, delivering a devastating blow to Trump’s defense. The judge explicitly found that Trump fabricated threats and had zero credible evidence to justify expanded emergency powers, including a proposed National Guard deployment. Courts at every level—district, appellate, and Supreme Court—rejected Trump’s claims.
Now, Congress is using the judge’s language as a template to investigate Trump’s broader abuse of executive power. With multiple rulings and unsealed filings describing a pattern of fabricated justifications and illegal conduct, Trump’s claim that he acted in good faith has effectively collapsed.
